“I am as old as my tongue, and not as my teeth!”
A TIME TO BE BORN
A beautiful and rambunctious baby girl would blossom to be the virtuous, strong, hardworking, selfless Matriarch of The Stubbs family. Jeminer Louise Stubbs was
the 3rd child of Estelle and Alfred Williams. A special little girl who made her mark the very moment she entered this world on
February 28th, 1937 in Blue Hills. Jeminer Louise was affectionately called Mima or Mimi by her
loving parents and siblings, a name that would stretch far beyond her small settlement of Five Cays.
Her first lessons of love and kindness began
with her parents and 5 siblings. Every birthday,
when asked her age, she’d display a big smile and respond with “As old as my tongue, and not as my teeth!”
“ I know nuffff’ to know better!” A TIME TO LEARN
Mima was a sensible little girl, a quick thinker and a sharp debater. Her natural abilities led her to begin her education at the tender age of 5 at the Five Cays All Age School. There, marked the beginning of knowledge and experiences that would be passed down to generations, and generations to come. She made many life long friends during her school years, however, her selfless and nurturing nature would lead her to make the decision to discontinue her schooling early, in order to assist her mother with caring for her siblings. Often times, we would remind her of her decision to end her education early, and she would calmly respond “I may not have finished school, but I know nuff’ to know better!”
“I love my family, and my family loves me!” A TIME TO LOVE
James “Big J’ Stubbs made his way into the beautiful settlement of Five Cays to perform his day’s activities, where he would cast his eyes upon a gracious and richly melanated beauty....she would introduce herself as Mima. It was then; he realized that he had met his intended. Conversations led to a short courtship before the couple would exchange vows in a winter ceremony in February of 1957. This day was marked by a memorable occasion, often recited by the pair, either together or individually, a memory of how they danced their way from Five Cays to The Bight to begin their lives as husband and wife.
