There is no such thing as a typical day in Katherine Ryan’s life but
the day we meet probably comes close. There was a baby shower
for her stylist in the morning, a meeting with her accountant, then
a production meeting, and finally our interview. One thing about
Ryan that seems clear is that she enjoys being busy.
Not so, apparently. “I would love to work 10 months a year and for the
rest of the time have a holiday sitting in my pants drinking Aperol
Spritz,” she says as we settle down to chat. “I’m lazy and I like
downtime. I just bought a hose attachment and was so satisfied just
watering my hedge.”
Yet to the public the Canada-born comic never seems to stop. When not
guesting on panel shows — she hosted the all-women edition of 8 Out
of Ten Cats Does Countdown in July — she is fronting Comedy Central’s
Your Face or Mine or judging the same channel’s Roast Battle. And
fitting in tours. Her sell-out show Glitter Room comes to the Garrick
Theatre in September.
In the wide-ranging show Ryan, 35, is the apotheosis of sassiness,
offering a funny feminist critique of Hamilton — she loved the musical
but not the real person — and gossiping about R Kelly and Celine Dion.
She also explains that she is interested in genealogy and has had her
DNA tested. She turned out to be so white she jokes that “I risk being
farmed into some selective breeding programme by Nigel Farage.”
