received, but with Netflix stumping up $20 million apiece for the two shows (with a
third to follow), it’s hard to imagine Chappelle is especially upset about the criticism.
Best gag: [On skipping a charity fund-raiser to attend the Oscars] “What am I, a f---
ing superhero? I need to have fun. I need to live, too! I didn’t f--- that water up!
Stevie Wonder was there, they didn’t need me!”
13. Katherine Ryan: Glitter Room (2019)
Katherine Ryan CREDIT: Lisa Rose/Netflix
In a nutshell: The London-based Canadian at her take-no-prisoners best. Ryan’s
flinty persona drives this zinging performance, though her hard-punching humour is
leavened by flashes of introspection and vulnerability about the realities of single
parenthood.
Best gag: “Men are like dolphins – best enjoyed on holiday.”
14. Demetri Martin: The Overthinker (2018)
Demetri Martin CREDIT: Erik Simkins
In a nutshell: Behind the boy-nerd image, Martin is one of the smartest comedians
on the circuit. Here he shares bone dry observations about doughnut holes, dogs,
sports bars, the alphabet’s most aggressive letters and more.
Best gag: “When people don’t sleep well, they say they tossed and turned. But I’ve
never slept so badly that I ended up lightly throwing things around the room.”
15. Sarah Silverman: A Speck Of Dust (2017)
Sarah Silverman CREDIT: Michael Rowe
In a nutshell: In an interview with fellow comedian Pete Holmes on his podcast
You Made It Weird, Silverman confessed she hadn’t been fully happy with her latest
Netflix special. The magic she had experienced taking the show on the road hadn’t
translated as she had hoped. She needn’t have fretted – A Speck of Dust is a fine
showcase for her laconic delivery and her gift for slowly-detonating gags. Now in her
forties, Silverman has partly discarded the risqué persona of her early career and her
observations here are more meandering and introspective – though still hilarious.
Best gag: “[Donald Trump] misses the sexist past. He hates that he was Person of
the Year and not Man of the Year.”
16. Jimmy Carr: The Best of Ultimate Gold Greatest Hits (2019)
Jimmy Carr CREDIT: Laurie Sparham/Netflix
In a nutshell: Netflix presents a round-up of its favourite talents, like Jimmy Carr...
Jimmy Carr... and Jimmy Carr. If you enjoy being shocked and offended from the
comfort of your couch, Carr is happy to oblige. This special is characteristically
mean-spirited and filthy-minded – while also confirming that he’s one of the most
assiduous joke-smiths working today.
