    A Breath of Fresh Air —
Teaching Centered Riding in Times of Covid-19
A “breath of fresh air” is a term we think of when we imagine something pleasant. But these days, we are under covid-19 pandemic restrictions. When we teach riding, we want to ensure both instructor and student stay safe. Physical distancing is necessary, and this prevents hands-on bodywork.
As a Centered Riding instructor, you can teach your student bodywork without taking risks. You can do this by teaching self-bodywork, in which you talk the student through an exercise while they explore their own body and movement, using their mind and imagination. Here’s an example of self-bodywork, exploring the Centered Riding basic of breathing.
Sally Swift taught us that when we breathe correctly, using our diaphragm, we can attain better posture, release muscle tension, increase energy and improve our balance. Those useful benefits are all available from just from taking “a breath of fresh air!” This self-bodywork exercise will help your student to improve balance, rhythm and freedom of movement, and feel more confident, as they ride through transitions, all just by focusing on their breathing.
