8. KUALA MUDA (KMU) Further on are Fibre-optic Link Around
the Globe (FLAG) was commenced in
Submarine Cable Station. 1997.
Since then Kuala Muda Cable station has
more connecting link to the world name
as South East Asia–Middle East-Western
Europe 3 (SMW3) in 1999, South Africa
Far East (SAFE) in 2002 and Bay of
Bengal Gateway Cable System (BBG) in
2016.
Situated at the Northern Region of
Malaysia, Penang is divided into two
parts, one part is the island and the other Connections
parts are the mainland known as FLAG
Seberang Jaya. The island is well known Fiber-optic Link Around the Globe
to tourist as Pearl of the Orient and a well
appreciated food paradise.
Kuala Muda Cable Station also known as
Penang Cable Landing station is located
on the mainland and ready for service
since its
nd
launching on 2 July 1981. This is the first
submarine cable station in Peninsular
Malaysia. The cable station consisting of SMW3
4 main buildings is designed to provide
high capacity network for voice and data South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe
traffic between Malaysia and countries in 3
Asia, Africa and Europe. The first
connecting link is the Indian Ocean
Commonwealth Cable Network (IOCOM)
connecting Penang to Madras, India on
24 December 1981. It ended in 2003.
