In the early 1900s, Leopold Schmidt
had an artesian spring walled in and
covered for public use. The sign
reads: “The water in this fountain
flows from one of our six artesian
springs. Water from these springs is
used in all the operations of our
plant, in making Olympia Beer and
Olympia Malt Tonic, and is bottled
and sold as Olympia Tumwater. This
tank is a section of a glass enameled
steel tank of which we have thirty,
each holding 12,000 gallons, in our
aging cellar. These tanks and the
purity of our water make possible
absolute cleanliness.”
