Although the man on the left remains
unidentified, the stocky fellow on the
right is indisputably Francis X.
“Shorty” Diemert. Shorty came to
Olympia in 1899 as a crewmember on
a sternwheeler. In 1910 he began
working for the Olympia brewery
until Prohibition, when he had to find
other work in the area. When
Prohibition was repealed in 1933,
Peter G. Schmidt asked Shorty when
he could come to work at the new
brewery. Shorty answered “Right
now.” He eventually became, in his
words, “chief engineer in one of the
finest breweries in the world.”
