Spotlight on secondary: Greening the curriculum
On their journey to incorporating environmental education throughout
their curriculum, let’s hear from learners and staff at Lewis School Pengam,
Caerphilly.
I’ve been taught about climate change, food waste and the food chain. In
Science, we have learned how plants are made and grow. In Geography we
have learned all about the climate and how it all functions, such as how the
weather moves and changes. We also learn about different types of rivers,
forests, pollution and how it releases a lot of harmful materials into the
environment like carbon dioxide which is an important constituent of our
planet’s air.
- James, year 8
In my school, we use a lot of eco work in the curriculum. For example,
in R.E we are currently learning about environmental sustainability talking
about understanding environmental sustainability and a list of things that
are currently affecting the environment like fossil fuels, climate change,
deforestation, pollution etc.
We also learned about greenwashing from different companies about their
products and how organisations respond to environmental sustainability in
a positive and a negative way. In science, we also learned about renewable
energies and fossil fuels. For example, the most renewable energy is
hydropower and the least renewable energy is fossil fuels like coal or natural
gases. In art we focused on drawing landscapes focusing on how much climate
change has affected the planet and endangered species.
