Marine biology at Ysgol Llanysilio

        Foundation Phase pupils in Ysgol

        Llanysilio have been learning all
about the animals who live in the

oceans, what they look like, what
they like to eat, and any threats they

        may face.

The school’s role play area was

        transformed into a beautiful beach,
a marine habitat for the learners

to don their researcher hats and
        become marine biologists.

They learned that turtles lay their
eggs on beaches and set up a

‘Turtle Watch’ station to ensure the
beach would be safe for any ’shelly’

        visitors.

The pupil’s arrived in school one

day to discover their turtle beach

was full of litter. The children
        investigated how that might affect

the turtles and then worked hard to
pick all of the plastic and waste out

of the sand and provide a clean and
        healthy habitat.

Inspired by what they had learned,
the pupils upcycled milk cartons and

        other waste collected from their

school and created a marvellous art
piece, which they even managed to

        win an award for.
