(6) Look into complaints and take sole moto notice of matters relating to:
• Deprivation of women’s rights;
• Non-implementation of laws enacted to provide protection to women and also to
achieve the objective of equality and development;
• Non-compliance of policy decisions, guidelines or instructions aimed at mitigating
hardships and ensuring welfare and providing relief to women, and take up the issues
arising out of such matters with appropriate authorities.
(7) Call for special studies or investigations into specific problems situations arising out of
discrimination and atrocities against women and identify the causes so as to recommend
strategies for their removal;
(8) Undertake promotional and educational research so as to suggest ways of ensuring due
representation of women in all spheres of life and identify factors responsible for impeding
their advancement, such as lack of access to housing and basic services, inadequate support
services and technologies for reducing drudgery, occupational health hazards and ways of
increasing their productivity;
(9) Participate and advise on the planning process of socio-economic development of women;
(10) Evaluate the progress of development of women center the Union and States;
(11) Inspect jails, remand homes, women’s institution or other place of custody where women
are kept as prisoners or otherwise, and if found necessary take up remedial action with the
concerned authorities;
(12) Fund litigation involving issues affecting a large body of women;
(13) Make periodical reports to the Government on any matter pertaining to women and in
particular various difficulties which affect women severely; and
(14) Any other matter which may be referred to it by Central Government
National Mission for Empowerment of Women: The National Mission for Empowerment of
Women (NMEW) was launched by the Government of India on International Women’s Day in 2010
with the aim to strengthen overall processes that promote all-round development of women It has the
mandate to strengthen the inter-sector convergence; facilitate the process of coordinating all the
women’s welfare and socio-economic development programmes across ministries and departments.
The Mission aims to provide a single window service for all programmes run by the Government for
Women under aegis of various Central Ministries. In light with its mandate, the Mission has been
named Mission Poorna Shakti, implying a vision for holistic empowerment of women.
The National Resource Centre for Women has been set up which functions as a national convergence
center for all schemes and programmes for women. It acts as a central repository of knowledge,
information, research and data on all gender related issues and is the main body servicing the
National and State Mission Authority.
Mission Statement: NMEW will achieve gender equality, and gender justice and holistic
development of women through inter-sectoral convergence of programmes relating to women, forging
synergy between various stakeholders and creating an enabling environment conducive to social
change.
