Know Before You Go

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO, and its application is one of the most
important safety aspects at LORAM. During the month of August,
the WORD will deep dive each of the 5 Life Savers. I encourage you
and your teams to review these topics and apply them when neces-
sary. Each railroad applies track protection and rules in different
fashion. The KBYG process allows LORAM to translate these differ-
ences into one language we can all apply.

Questions to Consider:

• Are all new hires familiar with KBYG?
• Have your team and customer (EIC) briefed on the 5 Life Savers

• What situations or Red Flags will cause your team to re-brief?
• What one aspect of the 5 Life Savers can you improve on?

Know Before You Go- 5 Life Savers

1. Pre-plan the route with the customer.
2. Verify and understand your track authorities as you receive them.
3. Know your on-track location at all times.
4. Obtain the commitment from your customer that track authorities will not be
released prior to notifying you.
5. Turn your “Right to Understand” into action.

Review of recent Near Miss Reports prove that our team is utilizing
the KBYG Process. Your attention to detail in the field is preventing
Out of Limits Events. Continue to uphold our customers and team
to this standard. Everyone turning their “Right to Understand” into
action will ensure everyone goes home safely.
