OPERATIONS UPDATES
Learning Vs. Training
By Brian Giop, Manager, International Services
Often when people hear the words learning and training, they envision the same task. However, that is like saying
all widgets are wutzits but not all wutzits are widgets. Learning is the result of training (in most cases), but learn-
ing is not the guaranteed outcome of training. Training is a tool or process that helps team members learn a new
task or skill. There are five levels of employee performance which can also relate to learning known as the Drey-
fus model. Those five levels in order are:
• Novice: This is the telling stage-
learners needs instruction and con-
structive correction.
• Doers: (Advance Beginner) Instruc-
tion is still required but they are con-
tributing to the team in a productive
manner.
• Performers: (Competent) Carrying
their weight in the team. Not telling
how to do their job but still provid-
ing feedback and recognizing reliable results.
• Masters: (Proficient) Have a deep understanding of what should be done and can teach
and coach others effectively on the subject.
• Experts: Highly self-sufficient employees who continually perform the tasks and can pro-
vide direction to others.
The way we help each other to achieve the next level is through training and providing the tools to help each oth-
er learn and develop the skills for the task(s) that are required to complete the jobs safely and effectively.
As our organization grows and new employees are introduced it is critical that we are giving them both the train-
ing and learning opportunities to grow into productive and engaged members of the team. Also, it is useful to re-
member that you yourself were once novice at the task you will be helping the new person learn.
In conclusion when you get your new hire, or new team member keep in mind that they need the training and
tools to be able to learn the tasks. Even the simple task has some level of learning required. It is our duty to pro-
vide this training and support to make them an effective member of our team for the benefit of not only the team
but the organization as a whole.
Likewise, if you are the new person for you the task is to learn, become a sponge and soak in as much as you can
handle. You will need to listen and follow instructions to move to the next level of comprehension for the tasks
being performed. I know from experience that the first tasks are not always the most glamorous, but once you
are well versed in these tasks you will be given more complicated duties as you develop. Learning never ends and
teachable moments are always occurring so watch listen and perform your tasks to the best of your abilities. This
will serve you in your career and in life.
