There was a general consensus that the matter concerning the teaching of History and
Geography should also be raised at the Ministry level, and that all those concerned should
work hand in hand at improving those subjects.

The meeting agreed that Geography and History should be pursued at the lower level the
Chairman was also in agreement and stated that all concerns raise about these subjects would
be documented and raised at a National Level. They then centered the discussion on the
English Literature Exam which experienced a low rate this year, and is now under review
along with Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Music, Principles of Business, Principles of
Accounts, Information Technology and Theatre Arts.

               8. Amendment to CSEC and CAPE Syllabi

The committee was informed that the syllabi for a number of subject areas would have been
amended. It was noted that CXC was constantly engaging in syllabus review in order to
remain current and relevant. This however, necessitated workshops to ensure that teachers
were aware of the revised requirements.

               9. Concern with Markers

There was concern raised by a committee member that U.W.I. students were engaged to mark
papers. It was drawn to the attention of the committee that CXC was now advertising for
markers. Committee members felt that teachers should do the marking. The question raised
was who should be marking CXC and CAPE Examinations? The Committee agreed that
with this system no one really knows who was marking the examination papers because
anyone can be engaged in marking the examination papers.

               10. Supervisors/Invigilators

It was drawn to the attention of committee members that there were some challenges with the
electronic upload at some centres, which forced the supervisors/invigilators to remain at the
institutions until the uploads were completed. This at sometimes was as late as 9:00 p.m.
This was particularly the case with EDPM.

It was agreed that the challenges experienced by the supervisors should be discussed at the
Ministry level rather than at CXC level.

               11. Visual Arts

Another area of concern related to the late notification received from CXC regarding how to
proceed with the Visual Arts samples. This year for the first time Visual Arts samples that
were submitted to the Ministry had to be shipped to Jamaica. The Ministry and the schools
were inadequately prepared for this late change in the arrangements for Visual Arts and Art
               and Design.
