improved quality of life. For example, a prosperous society relies on a healthy environment to

provide food and resources, safe drinking water and clean air for its citizens . It forces us to find
better ways of interacting with our environment in our living and work. A closely related concept
is Sustainable Development that is defined by the Brundtland Commission (1987) as development
that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to
meet their own needs. Sustainable development is a way of organizing society so that it can exist
in the long term. This means considering both the imperatives present and those of the future,

such as the preservation of the environment and natural resources or social and economic equity .
ACTIVITY: BRAINSTORMING
Brainstorming activity will be conducted to ascertain the understanding of
the concept of sustainability and the three pillars of sustainability.
A variety of photographs will be viewed to identify different
aspects of sustainability.
