The Jack-o-Lantern Scare
“R
emember you have a quiz tomorrow, so go
home and study,” Mr Stevens said as the bell rang
signalling the end of the school day. Everyone
shuffled out of their classrooms into the corridors.
“Hurry up, let’s go! Tanty said that she would be
making pudding today,” my cousin Raj said to me
as I met him at the gate.
“Hmmmm,” I mumbled salivating at the thought
of grandma’s delicious, hot potato pudding that
she usually baked in the drum oven in the back of
the house.
We hurried home and dropped our bags as soon
as we opened the door, our practised eyes
searching for any sign of grandma.
“Tanty!” we called out in unison but didn’t get a
response. “Grandma!’, we bellowed.
Raj went upstairs and got changed. When he
returned, we went outside in search of Tanty,
where we thought she must have been guarding
