they arrive, they also park in the front, awaiting instructions to move to the back parking lot at CAS when it’s time
for the meeting to take place.
With the go-ahead given to the foster family and the transporters, both drive to the back parking lot, where the
dog is released and introduced to his (or her) new, temporary family. During this time, the dog is given a break
from the long drive, and his foster parents start to familiarize themselves with their new family member. Pictures
and vides are often taken to memorialize the dog’s first few moments meeting the family that will care for him, for
at least a little while.
Transport drivers often chat with the foster parents (with everyone wearing masks) to apprise them of any specific
behaviors the dog exhibited during the car trip. CAS tends to more paperwork, including pet records and health
certificates. The foster family is given a copy and if they have any questions or concerns, CAS is happy to provide
guidance. Once the dog has had a chance to decompress and feel comfortable with his foster parents, they set off
for home.
Drivers are thanked for their time and the tender care they provided while the dog was in their car, and after a re-
quest to “Drive safely,” they also take to the road to go home.
A similar process takes place when a dog is transferred from his foster family to his forever family at CAS.
Back to Dale’s story: After the CAS adoption assistant reviewed James’s application and completed several other
important steps that are required before an adoption can take place, including a video “home visit” and a call to his
vet, James was thrilled when he was contacted to attend a meet-and-greet with Dale and his foster family.
James reports that all wore masks, but Dale wasn’t fazed by them—he just licked the masks. The foster family re-
layed their experiences with Dale, how his favorite activities were sleeping on the sofa and sunbathing, how he has
met kids and other dogs, and has had the occasional accident in the house, but will let you know when he needs to
go outside.
The meeting confirmed that matching Dale with James was kismet, and the pair drove off to live happily ever after
in Connecticut.
James says that Dale (renamed Mugsy) is a great dog who gets better every day.
