SCHOOL TRIP TO AMRITSAR &DALHOUSIE
THE LAND OF LASSI AND PARATHAS
ARADHANA BOSE, VIII/IX
It was the second week of May, 2018 and my school had shut down for summer
vacations. My father had planned a trip to Amritsar and I was very excited. This
was the first time I was visiting a place of immense historic significance in the
North-Western part of my country. We took a flight from Kolkata to Delhi. The
train we took to reach Amritsar was the Golden Temple Express. The journey to
Amritsar was eventful. The train was bustling with tourists like us. It took us six
hours from Delhi to Amritsar and when we reached our destination, I felt
transported to the movie scenes of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. The roads were wide
and clear. Once we reached our hotel, we decided to have lunch and rest for a
while since we were supposed to visit Jallianwala Bagh that evening.
I was very excited about the place because I had read about it .After having a
sumptuous meal of Gobi Paratha and Dal Makhani which made me lick my plate,
we headed for our visit to the garden where the Massacre of 1919 had taken
place. A chill ran through my spine when I entered the garden. I saw there were
bullet marks and holes in every wall . The well where thousands of people had
jumped to save their lives from the firing was covered with nets and chains and
was surrounded by a fence.
