NEGLECTED ARABIA 15
Going down again I looked through the two book-cases and found
books like Paine's “The Age of Reason/' Renan’s “Life of Jesus/’ and
on the table a copy of the “Freethought Weekly/’ The mission was
organized in 1921 by the same Indian who erected the mosque in Detroit,
but when Islam in Detroit became defunct he shifted his activities to

Chicago-as containing more negroes, so the leader infoi^ned me. I went
[ -jWay with some vivid impressions:
1—The appeal to race prejudice is a real appeal,
I x: 2—The pastor of a negro Baptist church half a block away scarcely :
? knew of the existence of the mosque and knew nothing of its activities. \

The Board closed its fiscal year April 30, 1927, with a
deficit of $32,346.14. Four friends have sent in $1,000
apiece since that date and a few smaller gifts have been
:
received, toward the deficit. Unless this burden can be
removed before October 1st when appropriations are made
for the following year, it will be difficult or impossible to
maintain work on its present basis. Can theTriends of *•
the Arabian Mission do something to meet the situation?
Checks should be made payable to the
