                       Sir,
.Vith reference to the correspondence ending with your
telegram Ko, 119-3 dated 30th January regarding the oppression

of Bahrain subjects by the Sheikh and his family, I havo the
                       honour to report as follows.
V/n receipt of your abovemontioned telegram I consulted the
Political Agene^, Bahrain ss to the best method of delivering the
warning to the Sheikh. The Political Agent suggested that in ordei
                                                                     1
to differentiate the visit from on ordinary vir^t of inspection
and to i;.r-l:o it more impressive the "Lawrence" might b^coompaniod
by one of Eis jesty's Ships. I agreed that this would bo 2 good
thing. Owing however to tho fact that no ship was available till
tho middle of February and that after thet ll.u.o. "Cyclamen", the
only 3hip in the Gulf, was ro^uirod elsewhere, my visit had to

bo deferred till tho 1st Larch end then postponed till tho 7th
Uerch. 'This turned out to bo r good thing for two reasons, firstly

because the Bahreinis mace a successful demonstration again* t the
m oppression of the Sheikh's family oarly in February, and secondly,
I because when my visyfc was postponed Sheikh Abdulla heard about- it-
f and ran away with the idoa that drastic action was about to be
