Majesty’s Ministor at Tohran, regarding tho status of tho Islands of Bahrein,
and of my reply theroto.
2. I trust that tho Govornmont of India will considor my roply ns correct,
hut if not, I would requost that I may ho furnished with furthor instructions
on tho subject.
3. Tho Lingah case mentionod by Sir H. M. Durand is ono in which a
French protdgd of Persian nationality is unjustly preferring a claim against tho
widow of a Bahrein subject who has long enjoyed tho protection of tins Resi
dency, and who is hcrsolf tho daughter of an emancipated slavo. Tho caso was
roforrod to Hor Majesty’s Logationin conscquonco of cortaiu charges of mis
conduct, which tho Fronch Vice-Consul at Bushiro has matlo against tho Resi
dency Agont at Lingah, roudoring it impossible for mo to disposo of it without
such roforouco.

No. 109. Your Excellency’s telegram No. 81. In Dcccmbor 1893 Her
Majesty’s Secretary of Stato for Foreign Affairs informed Her Majesty’s
Ambassador at Constantinople that tlio Chief of Bahrein was under British
protection, which would also bo extended to his subjects whonovor there may
be occasion for it. In Soptombor 1894 tho order to extend protcotion was
repoated by India Offico to Govornraonfc of India. Tlio Shaikh has boon
precluded by Treaty sinco 1880 from having political relations with auy otlior
foreign Power than tho British.
