A disturbance took placo ofF El-Wakra between some boats of tho Al-bin-
Ali and Amamcra tribes who were engaged in pearl-fishing and wore driven
by a 3torm to take shelter near the coast. Luckily tho disturbance had no
serious results, but in pursuance of the policy of the British Government, which
views with disfavour tho occurrence of any disturbances at sea, tho case was
taken up by the Resident, who, after on inquiry, decided to inflict a lino on
tho tribe which was held to be at fault.
During tho date season, owing to tho vigilant watch kept by the Moez-es-
Sultaneh, the Shaikh of Mohammorah, and also to tho presence of one of His
Majesty's 6hips in tho Shatt-cl-Arab, no case of piracy was reported, though,
later in tho year, on 2uth January 1001, a Bahrein boat was attacked near
Maamer on tbu Turkish side of,the river. The pirates have not been traced.
11. Navy. H.M.8. Sphinx left Bushiro for Maskat on the 16th April. In July she
visited the Arab Coast and Bahrein, returning to Maskat. She again returned
to Bushiro in January and also visited Basrah.
H.M.S. Redbreast arrived in Bushirc on 23rd September and proceeded
to Basrah on tho 26th idem. • Sho left the Gulf in the end of December for
Bombay.
H.M.S. Cossack arrived at Busliire on the 23rd November and left again
for Maskat on the 12th December.
H.M.S. Highflyer, with His Excellency Rear-Admiral Bosanquet on
board, arrived in the Gulf in March and visited Bushire and Bandar Abbas.
Of Foreign Navies, tho French 6tore ship, tho Drome, was tho only ship
which entered the Gulf during the year. She called at Bandar Abbas, Lingah
and Bushire, and ako visited Koweit, Mohammerah and Basrah.
12. Offlc:al Lieutenant-Colonel M. J. Meade proceeded to Bombay in the R.JVM.S.
changes. Lawrence on furlough and made over charge of his post as Political Resident,
Persian Gulf at Bombay, on 7th April 1900, to Lieutenant-Colonel 0. A.
lCcmball, who arrived at Bushire in the Laiorence on 26th April, and held the
post of Resident for tho remainder of the year.
Mr. Davis was First Assistant throughout tho year, and visited Shiraz
during the summer months, leaving Bushire on 10th June and returning on
23rd October.
Captain E. "Wickham Hore, I.M.S., was Residency Surgeon during the
year. Ho went on three months* privilege leave to India on 10th July, and
rejoined his post on 13th October. During his absence, Assistant Surgeon
J. A. Lobo, I.S.M.D., acted as Residency 8urgeon.
Mr. J. P. Sequeira returned from furlough on the 14th November, and
Mr. Gaskin having been posted to Bahrein, assumed charge of the post of
Extra Assistant to tho Political Resident and Vice-Consul.
During Mr. Gaskin’s absence and until the arrival of Mr. Sequeira,
Mr. P.'J. Gandhy was acting Uncovenanted Assistant and Vice-Consul, after
which he was appointed Superintendent of the Residency Office.
13. chancres Hr. Reinhardt, Imperial German Consul, held charge of the German Vice-
among F«>roign Consulate in Bushire up to the 24th April, when he went on furlough, being
representatives. reuevC(j by jjerr Roesler, who remained in charge of the Vice-Consulate until
March, when Dr. Reinhardt returned to Bushire. Herr Roesler went to Shiraz
during the summer.
M. Bryois, the French Vice-Consul, has not returned to Bushire, M. Hajji*
Mirza Hussein, the Dragoman of the Vice-Consulate, acting as Vice-Consul
throughout the year. # ,
Mr. Mocsmann, of the firm of Messrs. Hotz & Son, was acting Consul
for the Netherlands. Ho went on four months* leave to Europe on the 2nd
Prince Dabija, the Russian Consul-General at Ispahan, visited Bushire in
March and remained here for about a month.
