Toddy is not extracted from the date tree, as the people of those
parts have not yet acquired a taste for this liquor. But the experiment
has been made, and good toddy can be extracted therefrom at the cost of
the fruit.

P.S.—In the spring of each year it is necessary to take away the
offshoots that sprout rouud each tree, as these prevent the parent tree
from thriving.
