Present position is:—In addition to funds accumulated under sepa
rate heading as shown under " Remarks ” abovo, there is a balance of over,
three lakhs accumulated in the ' Consolidated Fund '. Of this tho Gov
ernment has allocated 1 lakh for tho purpose of carrying out improvements
in tho Customs promises, viz.: Construction of sheds on tho wharf. Com
pletion of Customs jetty—construction of living quarters for Customs
Director, and laying out light railway for goods, probablo cost Rs. 80,000.,
Rupees two lakhs remain for initial expenditure in connection with reforms
and if feasible for initiation of a water supply for Manamah, which tho
Ruler is anxious to expedite and which will confer a great boon on the
inhabitants. Meanwhile pending initiation of several of the reforms, ex
penditure under certain heads will not be incurred, and further funds will
accumulate. The Ruler has in view, such schemes, as introduction of
sorao pedigree cattle to improve local stock, a model garden to cneourago
cultivation of vegetables, the supply of which is always insufficient—possi
bility of a viaduct across the narrowest strip of water to Muliarraq—a costly
scheme but much favoured by the inhabitants. All such schemes arc,
II however, not for serious consideration until more necessary expenditure
has been met and estate is in considerable funds. They are mentioned
merely as schemes which the Ruler is known to favour and some of which
are urged on him by some of his subjects. A scheme lie docs not favour,
but for which there is a considerable demand, is for a school for Shiahs.
1 The civil list (item 1) includes a monthly contribution of Rs. 1,000 to the
Sunni Boys’ School.
