advances to tho Chief and not make any further contracts for tho loaso of tho
Customs boyond tho periods for which t.hcir * leases hold good ; and I would
solicit tho early orders of tho Govorntnont of India on this point, as it is
probable that tho Chief will soon try and oxtoud ono or both of the leases.
10. Tho host tirno to introduce thochango will bo during tho slack season,
that is to say, botwoon May and Soptomber. I do not anticipate that any
V aotivo opposition will bo experienced when tho now system is introduced, but
i it will, I think, bo advisable that a ship of war should bo stationed at Bahrein
at tho tirno when the eh an go is uiado and for somo little timo a f tor wards. I
think, too, that it might bo advisable to provido at an oarly date a small
guard of Nativo Infantry ns an escort for the Assistant Political Agent. An
escort of 26 men would, I think, be suitablo. It will be necossary to provido
accommodation for this osoort, and for this purpose a sum of about Its. 2,000
will bo required. A dotailed estimate on this account will bo submitted if tho
proposal is approvod.
