                                               In reply , Hr Brodriok stated that "in the

                                    "Persian Gulf should be instructed to act, as in proposed
                                    "in the 6th liaragraph of the draft letter, bj/ steadily and,
                                    "^s far as possible, unobtrusively inore sing their influence

                                    "and the confidence of the Shoikh in their advice and
                                    "power to direot and control his external affairs".
                                               An regards the question of Customs administration,
                                    rhioh the draft instructions stated to be the one point
                                    on which it was considered expedient to "offer authoritative
                                    advice" to the Shaikh at the present stage, the Ceoretary
                                    of State proposed to await a further oonniaiication which
                                    was promised.

                                               A few words nay he added on tho question of
                                    Arms Traffio.   In 180Q the Shaikh issued, on the advice
                                    of the Bo3i .ont at Bushiro, a notification prohibiting   the
                                    Import and export of arms and ammunition to and from
