           Macdonald, Secretary, Government, Military Department, Bombay, to Resident
           at Bushire, dated 4th March 1878).
               The reply was that there was no accommodation at Bushire for so many
           of the Marine battalion, but that arrangements could be made to accommodate
           a full company at Bassidore.
               284. Reduction and Changes were made sbusequcntly in the cavalry escort,
           so that in 1891 the escort consisted of—

               285. In 1891 the Resident wished to have certain other modifications to
                                          be made as it was difficult to get the proper

                                          class of men, and he had to depend only
           on such natives of India as happened to come to Bushire. He therefore proposed
           to reduce their number and increase their pay as shown below:—

               286. This proposal was sanctioned by the Government of India. But the
           men were required to pay Rs. 2 each for the chanda fund for the cost of uniforms
           and passage money when the men proceed on leave to India. The pay moreover
           covered the price of horse and its feed (letter No. 14739, dated 8th August
            1882).
               287. Much difficulty was however experienced in inducing the men recruited
              External A., August 1893, Not. 1-29.   to stick to their posts on the terms men­
                                           tioned, especially in compelling them to
              Extern*! A., May 1894, Nos. 136 37.
                                           pay the price of horses and saddlery. The
            Government of India therefore sanctioned the following arrangements in their
            letter No. 1369-E., dated 27th June 1893:—
