               Sehnan, the Persian, Bill'd, the Abyssinian, Salrib, the Greek, and 'Aisheh,
               mother* of the faithful. Also from the accepted and well-approved
                KI»:difelis Abu Bckr and 'Oinar, the companions of the flight, and the
               Ansars, or co-adjutors, may God be pleased with them all.
                   'Alxlallah-bin-Ibfulhi confuted the several fallacies in the doctrines
               of the various heretical sects, which have been shown in a previous part
               of this work. He taught that faith (Iman) consists both in word and
               docd,t and in following the precepts of traditional law.
                   slrficles of belief.—In this religion there is no sanction excusing
               any shortcoming in respect of it; nor is it permitted falsely to avow it;
               nor to give way to the passions. For this religiou requires that the
               paths of righteousness be followed, and also belief in the following, viz.—
                   In God and his Angels; in His Scriptures and Prophets; in Para
               dise and Hell; in Uis Promises and Warnings; in the Resurrection and
               the Judgment and the Last Day; in the messages brought by the Pro-
               pluts from their Lord. It is also necessary to believe that the Kor/tn
               is the word of God sent down to His Apostle Mohammed; that Ilis
               rewards are unrivalled, as Hi; puuishmcnts are unequalled, and that the
               mercies He vouchsafes are great, even as the trials lie imposes arc great.
               Also that God is the Creator of all things; there is none other than
               He; IIis promises arc not broken, nor His threats unfulfilled, for His
               word is true. That all that has becu revealed through Mohammed-biu-
               Abdallah is manifest truth.

               heavens contain Him not; He is God. There is none other God than
               IK*, the Oue, the Mighty; He is the Creator who maketh all things
               and giveth form thereto; who raiseth up and finally disposeth of all;
               life is Ilis gift and lie causcth to die; He is the living who dieth not,
               all-powerful; one and everlasting unbegotten and uubegetting; all-
               1-uworful to do that He willeth; imagination comprchendeth Him not,
               nur do created forms resemble Him; neither movement nor repose can
               be attributed to Him; all in earth and heaven is His, and that which is
