examples of bichrome show the area between black bands to be a solid red to
orange paint. Bichromes are also described from Yahya IVA, but there does not
appear to be any similarity.
Among the painted wares are pedestal bases 51m-n, both from level 26.
Base 51m is a fine gray ware, but shows no signs of paint. Base 51n, on the other
hand, has red paint or slip on a fine, sand-tempered, buff ware. Both are
reminiscent of pedestal base chalices recovered by the Danish Expedition from the
tumuli field at Ali (Bibby 1971:113). Also of note is the presence of plum-red
painted sherds. The paint in these examples is made from specular hematite.
Incomplete grinding leaves small reflective crystal faces or cleavage planes
exposed on the painted surfaces. These are quite distinctive and occur only in
levels 17-19.
Cooking Wares
As in earlier levels, cooking wares make up a large percentage of the Barbar n
assemblage. The most notable vessels are shown in Figure 52. Hole-mouth vessels
are quite common and are formed from the conspicous Barbar ware. Vessels 52g-m
are easily recognizable examples of the more complex, Barbar n hole-mouth.
