P. 12

  Employ Techniques to:
Make sure everyone is heard
Develop relationships and increase understanding Surface the perspectives of participants
Keep conversations and outcomes focused on objectives
Playing Field: Where are you? The impact of the environment on you and the group is important to consider. It makes a difference if you are in a commonly used room or if you have gone off site to a new and neutral location. How big is the space? Does it have windows? How are the tables set up? Does the set up allow for inclusion, visibility, and collaboration or does it create exclusion and segmentation?
Story: We are all constantly creating story to explain situations. Be aware that your story to explain behavior, goals, and outcomes is not always accurate. Allow the story you write as you facilitate to have an easy delete button. Be open to being incorrect in your assumptions. You will most often be correct and that is the danger. We are so skilled at assessing situations that we may miss or be more reluctant to let go of our story when we are incorrect. Be fluid. Be open to the variety of perspectives and stories that are surely in the room.
