Spidey Sense: Spidey sense is the human awareness of those around us, that sense of knowing something is going on – not that we're always right about it. Hybrid communication is difficult because our spidey sense is off. We can't feel the room, or the energy of the people in the room. Our focus is divided. Acknowledge that your spidey sense is not as heightened and make space for owning the awkward. Be ready to invite collision over courtesy.
Story: We all create story. It's one of our greatest human gifts. In hybrid communication we're still creating story based solely on the visual and this can create problems. Sometimes our stories are correct and other times they lead us astray. Be aware of when you are creating story. For example, "The people in the room are laughing. Story: They didn't like my idea." "Alex went off video. Story: They're not a team player." You may need to check-in in order to get clarification.
Ask Questions/Double Click: When something is not clear, you've missed something, or don't understand, ask a question with "how" or "what" to get clarification. Double click on ideas or words you need expanded or explained. Check-in with team members to be sure everyone is getting what they need from the meeting.
Move the conversation forward: The two key words in improv–"yes, and,"– keep the scene moving forward. When we use the word "but" it slows, stops, or negates what came before. When we say "yes" to the person we're speaking with, and then add more to the conversation we keep the the conversation and ideas flowing. When we feel resistance in a conversation, we can redirect the momentum by acknowledging what the other person has said. Our acknowledgement comes in the form of saying "yes". The acknowledgement doesn't have to be an agreement. The "and" helps to move the communication forward. Be aware of how often you use the words "but", "no", and "maybe". These words can contribute to a change in tone.
