        Story 145

                                                   Around the Earth

Ships travel the earth, en•cir•cling its fat girth. They travel

through channel and firth, from London to Perth, and home again
                       from berth to berth.

They carry those goods of which another nation has a dearth. This

brings both countries great mirth, for each enjoys a much greater

                       worth.

        Story 146
                                                          Elmhurst

In Elmhurst – beginning June first, lasting exactly one year to May

thirty-first – there was a drought, history’s worst. Ten thousand

                       persons died of thirst.

What is worse – when the clouds finally burst, mud slid and twenty
thousand more died submersed. Can you imagine a land more

                       accursed ?
