Story 176: Pig on a Spit

About midnight the pig was fit on the spit,

and placed over the charcoal pit. So that it
wouldn’t burn, a close watch was kept on it.

At noon the next day girls came some

wearing sweaters, mostly knits, and dresses
with slits. They were escorted by boys who

brought bats, balls and mitts, to shag flies
       and take hits.

At two o'clock watermelons were split and
seeds spit. Next the pig was removed from

the pit, then eaten for hours to the last
bit, just as the sun was about to, quit.
