I am interested in telling stories about how we overcome our brokenness and make meaning out of
it for ourselves and others. So, when I read Yogini, which tells a true story about a young woman who
rediscovers her musical talent through loss, I was IN. I fell in love with Sam, she is real, she is talented,
and she is a total badass. She breaks the mold of the stereotypical portrayal of girls in their teens
who are most often depicted scrolling through their phones, bouncing around with shopping bags, and
interacting on a surface-level basis. While there is some truth to that trope, there are many other truths
about young women that have yet to be explored on screen. Yogini gives us a unique character in an
unusual but universally relatable situation.
Directing is all about the conducting of images. This story has a beautiful rhythm, filled with emotional
beats of betrayal, hope, and letting go. It is my job to weave them together into a cinematic symphony.
I plan on bringing out the raw emotions of this story through a subjective, documentary-like style that
impacts the viewers on a visceral level. I am confident that Yogini will reach through the screen and
play the chords of audiences’ heartstrings.
