ACTIVITY 2

               Underline the passive verb forms. In some sentences, there is more than one passive construction.

                 1. The International Space Station was first launched in 1998.

                 2. American women were not given the right to vote until 1920.

                 3. The new president has been advised not to meet with the protestors, but that may have been
                   a mistake.

                 4. It can take a long time to create a new law. First, an idea, or a bill, is introduced by a member of
                   Congress. Then it is debated by various committees.

                 5. No one knows exactly when shoelaces were first invented, but it is thought that they were in use
                   as far back as 3500 BCE.
                 6. Many mistakes were made in the early days of the development of the Apple computer.

                 7. When parents get divorced, often children are too young to be told the real reasons for the divorce.

                 8. To learn about the density of ice, ice cubes are dropped into a glass of cooking oil so that students
                   can observe what happens to the ice as it melts.



                  ACTIVITY 3

               Label the underlined verbs in these active sentences T (transitive) or I (intransitive). Then rewrite the
               sentences with transitive verbs as passive sentences. Add by phrases only when necessary.

                 1. The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia

                   in 2016.


                 2. Native Americans burned areas of open land to protect crops from wild animals.



                 3. In the United States, many children enjoy organized sports programs.



                 4. Droughts in the Southwestern United States are occurring more frequently.


                 5. Some online news outlets reported the results of the elections inaccurately at first.



                 6. People in 25 different countries speak Arabic as a primary language.
