                                                                The Pax Romana

                                     1  The Pax Romana, Latin for Roman Peace, refers to a period of peace during the rule

                                  of the Roman Empire.  This period began in 31 BCE, when Augustus was defeating

                                  Marc Antony in a battle.  During this time, the Roman Empire was very strong, so
                                                                                               4
                                  citizens turn their attention from battles to engineering and the arts.  They focused
                                  on building roads and bridges, and it was during this time that they built the famous
                                  aqueducts.  The aqueducts were large structures that resembled bridges.  They carried

                                  water over long distances to supply fresh water to people who lived in the cities.  It was
                                  also during this time that the works of Roman poets, including Horace, Virgil, and Ovid,

                                  flourished and became popular.   The Pax Romana, an important period of peace and
                                  prosperity, lasted for about 200 years.
