ACTIVITY 10 Building Greater Sentences

Combine these short sentences into one sentence. You can add new words and move words around, but
you should not add or omit any ideas. More than one answer is possible, but these sentences require past
verb forms. (See Appendix 1, Building Greater Sentences, page 216, for tips on how to do this activity.)

1. a. Florida biologists put a collar on an endangered male panther.
b. This occurred in early 1986.
c. The biologists monitored the panther for almost nine years.
d. The panther died in 1994.

2. a. A marine biologist was looking for whales. c. She spotted a group of dolphins.
b. This was off the Washington coast. d. The dolphins were rare.

3. a. The Titanic sailed from England to the United States.
b. This was in 1912.
c. The Titanic hit an iceberg.
d. The iceberg was huge.
e. The Titanic sank.
