Commissioned Officer).” I said.

“Great, Specialist Tubbs!” 1SG Torres

responded with excitement. “OK, Specialist Tubbs,

if you want to, an NCO must know the difference

between an E-5, a Sergeant, and an NCO. Do you
know the difference?” he asked.

I thought to myself, “is this was a trick question?

Because they’re all the same...”—or so I thought. I

went ahead to answer him by saying, “There isn’t a

difference between the three, First Sergeant

Torres.”

“There is a difference,” he said with a smile, “let

me explain it to you, and don’t ever forget this:

 “An E-5 is a pay grade. Some people are in

a leadership position because of the money.

 “A Sergeant is a rank. Some people are in a
