‘The Cup - The Garden of Gethsemane’ - Alter Realism
.
Through the incarnation of the Cosmic Christ { the Word made flesh}, in the life and ministry of
Jesus of Nazareth . The painting creates and explores the sense of human struggle for Jesus in the
moment of knowing {in terms of being human } owing to the final realisation in surrendering his life
and freewill to give back to God at the hands of the material world.
The juxtaposition of Jesus and the cup representing the Divine cosmic ministry and Communion along
with the vision of his death, make the reference that Jesus was aware of this act he had to carry through.
The figure of Christ is taken from a copy painting {1524-1530 } by
Cerchia di Antonio Allegri detto il Correggio.
The Eucharist cup is part of the Vatican museum collection and visualizes the prayer of Jesus.
The scene after the crucifixion is taken from the painting by Vincenzo Irolli Napoli {1860-1949} ‘The
Deposition’ before 1936.
The garden scene is from the Papal Summer Residence at Castel Gandolfo.
