Elizabeth, 5th Duchess of Rutland ‘The Envisioning of Belvoir’

The painting depicts the act of dreaming envisioning her castle. The bounding portions of the picture space are blurred and
definition is diminished, to create the sense of dreaming. This is accentuated by the distant solidity of the castle and surrounding
land and therefore what is imagined.

Elizabeth radically changed the view to the castle with her vision for a new architectural style, when the now present castle was
built and interpreted through the Architect Wyatt and his sons.
Considering the fact that Elizabeth was the daughter of the 5th Earl of Carlisle, and most probably Castle Howard was in the main

Her childhood home, with its associated architectural aesthetic and social status would go a long way to explaining Elizabeth’s

Stance. It could be seen that Naworth Castle the original home of the Howards to look somewhat similar to the present Gothic
revival style of the present Belvoir.
Elizabeth was a romantic, and Belvoir was at the height of fashion in the Gothic revival style and Baroque interiors.

Elizabeth's imagination and formulation of inspired thought realised into existence is the Genius loci of Belvoir.
Created out of dreams, romantic notions it is the externalisation of Elizabeth’s envisioning, Belvoir is the harmonious human
relationship with land and nature.
