The view is quite exceptional, in that the scene encompasses ideals of landscape proposed
and sought out by both Vanbrugh and Capability Brown.
The foreground, with its presence of the pastoral idyll creates a dynamism to the
landscape, by the use of the expanse of the mirrored surface of the lake - this all in
‘Brownian’ terms.
The drama of scale and architectural expression of Vanbrugh’s Palace setting, along with
the connective element of the Grand Bridge, is transformed into a poetical expression.
