When Lord and Lady Randolph Churchill first saw Blenheim Palace Estate, Lord Randolph
remarked ‘This is the finest view in England’.

The setting of this autumn scene especially with the closing light, extolls the poetical quality
of the landscape. Capability Brown introduced the concept of a deeper lake to Vanbrugh’s
landscape, wherein the water level of the original lake was raised by 10 feet, thus partially
submerging the Grand Bridge. This created a transformative visual effect to the appearance of
the structure, in terms of its connectivity to the transient nature of sky and water. The fusion
of two creative expressions has resulted in a most exquisite aesthetic statement in landscape
terms. The view extends to capture the outline of the Palace; the Ducal Standard is raised to
signify that the Duke is ‘in residence’.
