The painting was conceived and arranged during a stay in Provence.
The table and chairs were in use during the late afternoon, where Susan
sat and read. The garden, with its profusion of colour, enveloped the area
of focus, holding in the arrangement. The setting prompted the idea of
sharing time that is set aside in this case, for reading.
The pastime spent reading seemed appropriate as a narrative, depicting
the duality of an inner imagined world, yet being part of the physical
surrounding. The composition has a two-fold component, in which it is
primarily a garden scene with figurative content, but also incorporating
the subject of still-life, which acts as a mechanism for the suggestion in
the overall narrative.
The placing of chinaware and books by the empty chair opens the
possibility of a second companion. The interpretation is left to the viewer
to decide.
