After graduation from Fort, I attended Clark College
where my guidance counselor was Dale Beacock. I
wanted to get into Clark’s Jazz Band and asked Dale
about tryouts. Dale said I didn’t need to try-out
because he knew the talent from The Johnson
bands! I studied under Dale for two years and then
headed on to the University of Portland and the
Performing Arts program. Like many of us, I played in
several club bands and had a blast doing it.
After college I was in the ski industry for about 15 years as a buyer in sporting
goods, tennis, and snow sports. I was active in SIA (Ski Industries of America) and
NSGA (National Sporting Goods Association) I also spent some time as a technical
representative for Volki Ski Company. During that time frame, I was very active in
City League Ski Racing and had two City League teams. I raced until I got too
old—35. I left the Sporting Goods industry and started a contracting business
which I still own and run after 30 years.
I married my beautiful wife Jeanne in 1981 and we have two kids: our daughter
Kaycee and our son Kevin. The kids and I are active in the Mogul Busters Ski
School where we teach kids to ski! We live in the Columbia River Gorge on a small
farm with a beautiful view of the Crown Point/Vista House. We have raised cattle
and had a road-side vegetable stand. I’ve recently added to my grape/wine habit
with 350 grape vines and another 250 on the way this spring. I think I need more
to do!
Every year we host a star party in mid-
August, with great music, wine, and
hopefully the Perseid meteor shower.
Everyone is welcome!
