One of Ray’s great leadership
philosophies was this: He treated
us like musicians and not kids;
and because we were treated like
musicians, we could tackle the
tough charts because that was the expectation.
I carried that philosophy forward during the years I
was involved with Broadway Bound Children’s
Theater here in Seattle. Our philosophy was that if
you wanted to be in a production, we would find
you a role. We treated our kids like professional
actors first, and that’s how they performed: Very
professional, always on time, & always knowing
their lines and their blocking. They could be 7 or 8
years old, but we treated them like colleagues and
co-conspirators, and they treated us to stunning
performances night after night.
