SPECIAL FEATURES AND HOME IMPROVEMENTS
§ Our home is a historic Georgian neo-colonial designed by the
renowned architect, Cameron Clark. It was originally designed for George
Macy Wheeler, a Bridgeport industrialist. The home features exquisite
moldings & quality oak floors throughout, 5 fireplaces, cozy rooms which can be
closed off for extra comfort or privacy & a full walk-up attic w/ cedar closet. The
original landscaping & stone walls were designed by his wife, Agnes Clark, a well-
known landscape architect. We are in possession of their original drawings.
§ An extensive kitchen/family room addition was undertaken in 1981 including
skylights to create a passive solar heating system & southern-exposed all day sun room.
This expansion included the finished walk-out lower level recreation room w/ fireplace &
pool table. A new ironwood deck was added off the kitchen/family room in 2000 which is
covered with an awning for seasonal outdoor extension of the family room.
§ The home is protected by a monitored alarm system w/ direct connections to fire &
police departments and includes smoke, fire, freeze & Carbon Monoxide detectors.
§ The Kitchen was totally renovated in 2003 w/ new cabinets, granite counters and all
new stainless steel Wolf ovens & gas stovetop. There are 2 Bosch dishwashers including
one in the existing butler’s pantry, a great asset for dinner parties & family gatherings.
§ The 2 furnaces are relatively new & include humidifiers for winter comfort. During the
warmer seasons central air conditioning maintains a pleasant environment protecting
the contents of the home and its inhabitants from unpleasant humidity.
§ The exterior of the home has been meticulously maintained with replacement of
siding where needed. The entire house was stripped & repainted in 2005/2006 removing
any residual leaded paint. The cedar roof has been periodically replaced w/ new copper
flashing, ice shields & ridge vents. Both brick chimneys & surrounding copper flashing
were replaced in 1998 maintaining their colonial style.
§ The grounds include many specimen trees & shrubs, perennial gardens &border
plantings providing privacy screening. An extensive irrigation system surrounds the
house & services the entire rear yard. Outbuildings consist of a restored antique corn
crib set on a field stone foundation w/ storage beneath & a separate wooden shed for
storage of yard tools.
§ The in ground oil tanks were remediated in 2004 to comply w/ new regulations & 2 275
gallon oil tanks were installed in the heated garage. These tanks have been esthetically
enclosed w/ cabinetry above for additional storage. A new Trane gas heater was installed
in the garage in 2005. In keeping w/ environmental safety a total asbestos abatement was
done in 2011 & the house was professionally evaluated & cleared for detectable Radon.
§ A Generac 25kw generator & 500 gallon underground propane gas tank was installed in
2006 which has never failed to keep us safe, functional & warm during occasional periods of
power outage, a decision we have never regretted. The septic system was completely replaced
in 2005 w/ installation of new leaching chambers in the lower rear yard, This location was chosen
to preserve the higher elevation of the rear yard which is ideally suited for a future swimming pool.
In order to protect out specimen plantings and perennial gardens the rear yard has been completely
enclosed with inconspicuous deer fencing.
