AN INTERVIEW WITH THE HOMEOWNERS OF 274 RIDGEFIELD ROAD
WHAT MADE YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH THIS HOME?
We have had the opportunity to live in various cities across the country and
we enjoy renovating older homes. When we located to the area we knew that we
wanted a historic home in a New England town with a very community-oriented
area feel, excellent schools and convenient access to commuter rails and highways.
We found the Middlebrook Home which is a true landmark in Wilton, with loads of
historic architectural detail, a two acre parcel of secluded, beaucolic property and
with easy access to the Wilton Town Center. The 1727 home had been lovingly cared
for over the centuries, and had great potential for a careful renovation. The renovation
was a labor of love and a great success which blended the home's historic charm with
modernized conveniences and an open, light-filled floor-plan.
PLEASE DESCRIBE THE RENOVATION PROCESS ...
Our goal was to create an entrance and flow that revealed key architectural elements
of the home, such as several of its fireplaces, a first then allowed guests to be drawn
throughout the home. We wanted the renovated kitchen to included gourmet
appliances, craftsman grade cabinetry and an atmosphere which was inviting for
cooking, dining and cocktails with our guests. We invited an architect/friend, with
whom we had worked successfully on another project to join us for a weekend of
brain-storming on the plan and enjoyed making pizza's in the working Beehive oven.
Their design along with the extensive participation of a professional architectural
engineer and Klaff's Kitchens resulted in what is the best kitchen, and overall
renovation, that we've ever done! Although we don’t have a pool, the prior owners
had a site plan completed, so adding one could be quite simple!
WHY ARE YOU MOVING?
We own a second home in Maine and we plan to spend more time there. Our
children have grown up and, after attending the Wilton schools, went on to
complete their college educations. We no longer need a home of this size. We enjoy
our neighbors and the Wilton community and will miss them dearly!
TELL ME ABOUT THE GROUNDS ...
The home is privately situated while also providing a scenic view over two acres of
protected wild space in the meadow behind. From early Spring through late Fall, a
variety of plantings and trees, including cherry trees and heirloom apple trees, are
always in bloom. We enjoy entertaining on the back patio and often find ourselves
with close friends sitting around the fire-pit on weekends. The circular drive allows for
unrestricted parking, even while hosting events upwards of 60 people.
WHAT MAKES YOUR LOT SO SPECIAL?
The preserved space behind our home makes it very private and is protected from further
development. When we look out over the property and surrounding area we can visualize much
the original 58 acres of the original Middlebrook family farm. Scott is a runner and enjoys the ability
to leave through the back pathway and run down through town and back.
