AN INTERVIEW WITH THE HOMEOWNERS

with

PHIL & TERRY MURPHY
PROUD HOMEOWNERS

ON PEQUOT AVENUE

since 2004

What made you fall in love with 470 Pequot Avenue?
We LOVED the location!! We walk to everything! - the train, post office, pharmacy, gym, art
gallery, Pequot Library, village restaurants & more! We achieved our goal of preserving a historic
home but with modern conveniences of custom kitchen with high end appliances, C/A, beautiful
gardens with irrigation system and outdoor lighting. Quality craftsmanship throughout!

Please describe the renovation process ...
Our architect & building team were meticulous to detail, seen in the quality materials & superb
craftsmanship. We expanded our home to create a beautiful open kitchen w/ custom cabinets,
wainscoting, walnut counters & island! High end built in SS appliances are great touches.
Foundation was reinforced w/ steel beams & installed CT Basement System. Driveway was
approved by HDC for off street parking. Renovation project was collaborative with HDC.

Why are you moving?
We’ve had a home on Block Island for 16 years. We now have 6 grandchildren, so it’s time to
stay year round ""on island"" and enjoy island time w/ our children & their families. We have long
owned a local condo as well, so it's time to simplify our lives. I pray that the new owner loves the
history of this AMAZING home, as much as we do. It is truly a place to be cherished!

Will you miss the neighborhood?
We’ve been blessed with wonderful neighbors who show genuine friendship while respecting
one another's privacy. We have shared all the events of our lives with our neighbors over the past
12 years. All 6 grandchildren were born during our time here!

Tell me about the grounds ...
Our gardens are vibrant, joyful & contemplative. We created a private patio/garden with a gas
lantern, outdoor lighting & irrigation system. Our gardens are known in Southport for our
abundance of Russian sage, lavender, hydrangeas and so much more!

What makes your lot so special?
Our Southport Village location is very sought after. It’s close to the village, train, harbor, Southport
beach & library. The private rear patio/garden is rich with sounds of birds, church bells & distant
trains. The annual Blessing of the Fleet parade passes right by our front yard!

Describe your experience working with the historic district commission ...
When one buys a historic Southport property, they begin the process of true collaboration with
a Commission who strives to preserve the incredible history of Southport. One must adhere to
deadlines for submitting applications for changes & appear at the HDC meeting with materials
requested. The Commission will become your partner! We were awarded a Conservancy Award
during our early years of renovation. It’s a gift to live in historic Southport village!
