    Obninsk "Technology" has developed a new composite material




            Obninsk  research  and  production  enterprise  Technology  named  after  A.G.  Romashina
    (State Corporation Rostech) has developed a new composite ceramic material based on zirconium
    dioxide. The material can withstand thermal shock up to 2000 °C and can be used in aggressive
    chemical environments. The created heat-resistant ceramics are intended for the production of
    products that operate at high temperatures, Rostech reports.
                                                                       The composition is based on zirconium
                                                                dioxide, which has a unique set of properties:
                                                                high strength and hardness, heat resistance
                                                                and ionic conductivity, biological inertness and
                                                                chemical resistance in metal melts. To achieve
                                                                the  specified  characteristics  -  high  thermal
                                                                stability and chemical stability - zirconium
                                                                dioxide was synthesized from nanocrystalline
                                                                powders with  additions of  magnesium  and
                                                                calcium oxides. Thus,  a composition was
                                                                obtained that possesses the properties of all
                                                                the elements included in it.
                                                                       The  new  composite  ceramic  material
                                                                was created from domestic raw materials and
                                                                is intended  for  the  production of  products
    subject to thermal shock at operating temperatures up to 2000 °C. The material can be used
    for  the  production of  refractory  nozzles, nozzles for  spraying metal  melts,  dispensers  for
    continuous casting of steels, crucibles for induction melting of metals and alloys. A pilot batch of
    consumables for the production of metal powders for the production of high-precision products
    of the aerospace industry, nuclear power by the additive method has already been manufactured
    from a composition based on zirconium dioxide, which successfully passed the first tests.
            "Currently, no one produces a composite with such characteristics in Russia, but there
    is a demand for it. Products made from this material are indispensable in metallurgy, nuclear
    power, and transport engineering. In addition, we will be able to solve the problem of import
    substitution of components and consumables that are used both in equipping equipment and in
    manufacturing products," said Andrei Silkin, Director General of ONPP Technologiya.
