NLMK-Ural has mastered a new steel casting technology
NLMK-Ural (part of the Russian Long Products Division
of NLMK Group) has launched closed casting technology
on a continuous casting machine in an electric arc furnace.
Its introduction will make it possible to obtain a steel billet
of a higher quality by reducing the intensity of secondary
oxidation of the metal. The new technology is necessary for
the production of high quality wire rod, which is used in the
production of high-strength fasteners, rope, cord and welding wires for critical purposes. Closed
casting will also allow the active use of alloying additives, in particular aluminum, which will
improve the physical and mechanical properties of steel.
Earlier, NLMK-Ural launched the production of continuously cast steel billets with a section
of 150x150 mm. The launch of the production of steel billets of a new cross-section and the
application of closed casting technology will allow NLMK Long Products to bring new types
of products to the market and improve the quality of existing ones. Production of one of the
most sought-after products - high-carbon wire rod - will be increased by 40% per year while
improving physical and mechanical characteristics.
