Buddy loves a good laugh?
By Steven Turner Walker Mortuary
Well, I have found that yes indeed they love to laugh, they love to play jokes, they love to play and they espe- cially love to eat and eat and eat. This huge “squirrel feeder event” that we’ve been planning, (and yes it is definitely going to happen), has taken a lot longer than I anticipated. Though it is a lot of work and at times frus- trating, I can see that Buddy is enjoy- ing watching every little detail.
He knows that once again he will be the center of attention, as if he isn’t always the center of attention. I think in his little squirrel mind, this is nor- mal. A squirrel enjoys being a squirrel. It made me think of a story a friend of mine told me the other day. He heard some commotion outside, so went to the window to see what was up. There were two squirrels playing tag, running in circles around a tree, up the tree, down on the yard and then he noticed there was a cat nearby tak- ing this all in. The cat slowly ap- proached the two fun loving squirrels, thinking he was sneaking up on them, the cat came closer and closer when suddenly, the cat lurched out and ran up the tree on the heels of the squir- rels. The poor cat however, did not have a good hold on the tree and fell back down.
My friend said the two squirrels sat on a branch gazing down at the feline and laughed their heads off. The cat of course starting grooming himself, which is the subtle way of a cat to cover over embarrassment. I asked how he knew the squirrels were laughing and not just scolding. He said, “I could tell by the smile on their faces.” So there you have it, an expert explaining that squirrels can and do laugh.
Needless to say, I’ve been watching Buddy very closely and it is true. Sometimes I look at him while he is chattering, because he just chased away a hungry cat or is jumping after a “fly by” bird and I think I can see a smile. When the day comes that I see him fall down holding his stomach with a good belly laugh...then I know I’ve been watching him too closely. That little squirrel sure is a lot of fun. We look forward to everyone who joins us for the dedication of his feed- er, but I hope no one will trip or fall, because Buddy will laugh at you, he has no manners.
Thanks for listening. Steve
